I was walking back and forth on the platform. There was a bush there, like a little briar. I picked a branch with three little leaves and I put it in my pocket. And when I got back to Paris I painted it. Just past all of the larger than life vessels in The Oceania Hall and far from the blurred crowds gathering to see the more popular Impossible Conversations, there is a quiet wing at The Met devoted to eighty drawings of Ellsworth Kelly. Ellsworth Kelly has always been the embodiment of improving myself to be able to come somewhat close to his line quality, and the exhibit has made me even more of an admirer. The best lesson in reduction, it is a real treat to see so many of his large plant drawings up close. Literally making my heart stop with their full watercolor bleeds and deft pencil strokes on aged paper from as back as the 1940’s.
Andrew surprised me with the hardcover book from the exhibit; it is you he says. The book is super intense, clothbound with so many incredible plates and some pages that fold out, along with a very inspiring interview in the back. If you love plants and flowers, you must go.
