There comes a time of clarity when you wisen up and realize that understated and classic is just the way to go. The 3.1 Phillip Lim girl has known this well for the past few seasons. She grew up quite some time ago. But something has changed about her for Fall ’13, exuding the charged air of a traveler who has been on a mysterious ride of a journey and knows just what it’s like to feel that rush of fast wind on your face. This season, she has met a Foxfire-esque gang of girls who hang out with all the moto racing boys.
The result is the perfect balance of clean and free. Lines are sculpted and smart, but a wild heart comes forth in a multicolored patchwork fur, the kind you’d always hoped to come across one day in a vintage store. There was so much of that in this collection - finally, worn in blue jeans embellished with patches that look like they’ve been collected for years. Plenty of perfect leather separates in keeping with the racer theme were more soft than aggressive with the right touches of shearling, layers of mohair, slouchy sweatshirts and round ‘harly’ shades.
As usual, coats were a standout; the only problem was not being able to examine each up close to discover its intricate details. The camel oversized pea coat that caught my eye also comes in midnight blue and promises some sort of trompe l’oeil layering, paired with a separate matching wool bib that disguises as a turtleneck. Clever. An unexpected discovery, sonomama promises just that with an easiness that is always beautiful, as it should be.
